Scholarship Review Committee

YES Abroad is back! As you may remember AFS administered the YES Abroad program (for more information on the YES Abroad scholarship please click here) sponsored by the US Department of State in 2009-10. The program took a break for 2010-11, but we are back and recruiting for 2011-12.

In early 2009, AFS Volunteers reviewed applications for 35 scholarships to study abroad for an academic year in Turkey, Egypt, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Malaysia. As the people who have given their hearts and hands to the YES students hosted in the US, you know what it takes to be a stellar YES Scholar. This is an opportunity to determine which American high school students will advance to the final round of selection! We are currently looking for approximately 75 volunteers to participate on a scholarship review committee to read and evaluate applications.

Who? We are looking for approximately 75 volunteers from across the country to participate as evaluators. Evaluators can be volunteers, host parents, host grandparents, returnees, current YES students...in other words, feel free to share this opportunity!

What? Each evaluator will read 8 - 12 student applications, including the students' answers to four essay questions, a letter to a host family, and an academic form. Reading 8-12 applications applications will be an approximate time commitment of 2.5 hours per week for three weeks.

Where? You may read the applications in the comfort of your own home, or wherever you prefer. For this first-round of the YES Abroad selection process you do not need to attend any in-person events.

When? Applications will be reviewed in January. If you are interested in being an AFS evaluator, please sign up by Friday, December 10, 2010 by sending an email to Darin Smith-Gaddis, YES Abroad Program Specialist at yesabroad.org.

Here's a timeline of important YES Abroad dates:

Thursday, December 10, 2010: Deadline to sign up as a evaluator.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011: Conference call to review the guidelines. AFS will send out the scoring sheets, judging guidelines, and the conference call agenda electronically prior to the call.

Wednesday, January 26, 2011: AFS Admissions department will send the application packets, electronically.

Tuesday, February 15, 2011: Scores are due! (It's a tight turn around, so plan in advance!)

Approx/ one week later: First-round finalists are announced!

Why? This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on the lives of our outstanding candidates! You will learn a lot from the applications about what motivates a teenager to experience the world!

You may sign up now by responding to Darin Smith-Gaddis, via yesabroad.org.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or need additional information. We look forward to working with you!
