From AFSWiki
For information about the Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Abroad (YES Abroad) program, please see the YES Abroad page on the AFS Wiki: YES Abroad
The National Security Language Initiative for Youth Program (NSLI-Y) provides merit-based scholarships for eligible high school students to learn less commonly taught, yet strategic, languages in summer, semester, and academic-year overseas immersion programs. Those languages are Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Farsi, Russian, and Turkish. NSLI for Youth - a venture funded by the U.S. Congress, and administered by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs - encourages beginning, intermediate, and advanced language learners with a passion for learning languages, communicating across cultures, and living abroad to apply for 325 scholarships in 2009.
NSLI-Y scholars are participating in AFS programs; therefore, NSLI-Y scholars will be
AFS Participants and will share similarities with AFS Core students with the following notes and exceptions:
- NSLI summer programs last six weeks, versus 4 weeks for core program students
- NSLI provides supplemental, on-going language instruction
- Domestic travel to the Gateway Orientations is covered by the scholarship
- Domestic Gateways and travel dates are the same for NSLI students and Core students except for those students on Year and Semester programs to Egypt and Turkey (see below)
