WHO: 60 Girl Scouts from Fox Valley Council 7 international students from American Field Service (AFS)
WHAT: World Neighbors Workshop
WHEN: Saturday, April 4, 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
WHERE: Ginger Creek Community Church 2850 Ginger Woods Parkway Aurora
DETAILS: When the students from Japan, Iceland, Brazil, Hungary, Norway and Finland share their personal stories, the Girl Scouts pay rapt attention. It makes the world a more neighborly place, the whole purpose of the World Neighbors Badge Workshop. The bonus is having the AFS students who are currently living in our local communities - St. Charles, Batavia, Aurora, Yorkville, Sycamore and DeKalb - speak and show and tell about what life is like in their home country. All the participants learn about customs and they also learn about difficult social issues such as hunger and poverty. The day is divided into sessions so each small group of Girl Scouts has an opportunity to interact with a student from each of the countries. It's a colorful, song and game-filled event bringing the world together a little closer.
Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's pre-eminent organization for girls, with a membership of more than 3.5 million girls and adults. Today, as when founded in 1912, GSUSA helps cultivate values, social conscience and self-esteem in young girls, while also teaching them critical life skills that will enable them to succeed as adults. In Girl Scouting - and its special girl-only environment - girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together.
Each year more than 2,500 international high school students come to the USA with American Field Service (AFS) to study and live with host families. AFS, since its founding in 1947, has matched families and students all over the world. More than 350,000 students and families worldwide have experienced the lifelong rewards of participating in AFS."
