Today, August 1, 2011, is the first day of Ramadan- the holy month of fasting for Muslims. During Ramadan, observant Muslims do not eat or drink from sunrise to sundown.

Many YES and FLEX students, as well as some core AFS students who are practicing muslims, will fast as they arrive in their host communities across the US. In order to prepare the AFS community of volunteers and host families of students likely to fast, Sponsored Programs has organized two Ramadan calls. The first Ramadan call took place on Sunday, July 31st. There is still room if you wish to attend the second call which will take place on:

August 2nd

9:30 PM Eastern (8:30 PM Central/7:30 PM Mountain/6:30 PM Pacific).

Interested? Dial in: 1-(866) 411-1248.

You will then be prompted for a conference pass code which is 6258785611 followed by the # sign.

The call will be an opportunity to hear first hand from an Imam, a dietician, a host mother, and a cluster coordinator about the logistics of Ramadan, the spirituality of the month, what to consider when preparing meals, how to take into consideration the long days when planning an orientation. In addition, a YES alumna also provide her insight and perspective about experiencing Ramadan in the US!

There are also several resources compiled by the Sponsored Programs team, available at Ramadan_Facts!
