Overview

The U.S. Department of State requires national criminal background checks be done annually for all volunteers.

Registration Renewal Requirements

  • Update information on volunteer application
  • Accept volunteer agreement online
  • Consent, complete and pass national criminal background check

personal references are not required as part of the re-registration process unless their file has been closed for more than 2 years

Registration Renewal Process Steps

1. Auto e-mail sent out to all registered volunteers who’s criminal background check will expire within 60 days

  • E-mail will contain link that will connect volunteer to their online volunteer application form

2. On the online volunteer application page, volunteers will be able to:

  • Update their contact information
  • Answer background questions
  • Review and agree to the AFS-USA volunteer agreement

3. Online national criminal background check

  • Auto email will be sent out to volunteer with link to provide online consent and begin the online national criminal background check

4. Registered

  • Upon completion of all parts of the registration renewal process, an auto email will be sent to the volunteer confirming that they are once again registered as a volunteer
  • Volunteers that need an official AFS registration card must request a card by emailing vol.reg@afs.org

Registration Renewal Timeline for Completion

  • Volunteers will have 60 days to complete the registration renewal process
  • Auto email reminders will be sent out to volunteers every 3 days, up to 10 times or until action is taken.
  • After 60 days, if the volunteer has not started the registration renewal process, their Global Link record will be marked as “closed”, all affiliations made "inactive", and their access to Global Link and AFS Wiki will no longer be available.
