Accountability

This committee is accountable to the National Council. Any work done by the committee which leads to changes, additions or revisions to policies, procedures, or structure which fall under the National Council’s decision making authority will be presented to the National Council for input and final approval before moving forward.

Committee Charge

  • (I3c) Develop and oversee implementation of national volunteer recognition plan.
  • (I3a) Consult and support staff: (4) on selection criteria to be used in selecting volunteers for any special projects, programs, or travel.
  • Oversee the annual Galatti nomination and selection process; name(s) to be proposed to the National Council for nomination to AFS International
  • Propose an annual volunteer recognition plan to the National Council

Specific Objective

The Volunteer Recognition Committee will

1. Set guidelines, timelines and supervise the implementation of all awards and volunteer recognition including, but not limited to, the selection for chaperone and/or volunteer study exchange travel.

2. Support staff with guidelines for recognition in the absence of a regional recognition committee.

3. Develop and implement a plan for on-going recognition with an annual review.

a. Provide annual report of recognition plan to the National Council and staff.

4. Ensure that publicity is provided for nominees of all awards coordinated through Office of Volunteer Development.

5. Provide a brief report at National Council meetings a minimum of 3 times a year, and/or when awards are announced.

6. Create selection committees as needed to help the Volunteer Recognition Committee.

Membership

  • The chair of the committee will be a volunteer member of the National Council as chosen by the National Council
  • The committee will include one of the staff members of the National Council
  • There will be six additional volunteers, two from each region
  • There will be two additional staff members

Method of Appointment

  • Volunteers will be selected by the National Council member responsible for chairing this committee and the Director of Volunteer Development. The committee will attempt to have an appropriate balance of backgrounds, experience, and geography represented on the group.
  • Staff members are appointed based on recommendations by the National Council Chair, Volunteer Development Staff and the Vice President of Organizational Development

Member Terms

  • Volunteers, other than chair and chair-emeritus/chair-elect will serve three year terms
  • Staff members should commit to two years
  • Statement about committee continuity, if needed

Frequency and Methodology of Meetings

  • The committee will meet as needed via teleconference and in person once a year if budget allows
  • Regular email correspondence, with sufficient frequency, will be required to complete the agreed upon tasks.
  • Committee members may be asked to serve on selection subcommittees related to specific awards. i.e. Galatti Award, chaperone flights, etc.
  • The Committee will be supported by the National Council, Volunteer Development Department, and staff.
