Overview
In late 2008, AFS-USA began to invest additional resources into meeting the Volunteer Development needs of the organization. Three additional staff positions were added in the department in the fall of 2008 and the responsibilities of other staff in the department were adjusted.
Through a series of meetings with volunteers and staff in the summer and fall of 2008, along with our work with Susan Ellis, a leading consultant in the field of volunteer development, a number of priorities were identified for the department for the fall of 2008 and into 2009. These priorities are based on the Core Principles of Volunteer Development that we have created for the organization.
Priorities for 2009-2010
As a result of the organizational study (see Organizational Study Background Papers) AFS-USA has conducted over the past year and a half, the Volunteer Development Department began the launch of the revised volunteer, chapter, and area team structure and volunteer governance model during the fall of 2008. Much of the work envisioned for the National Council and the Volunteer Development Department in 2009 will consist of implementing the new structure, working very closely with all of our current chapters and area teams to understand their specific strengths and weaknesses, what needs they have in terms of meeting the new criteria, and what support they need from the Volunteer Development Department in regards to volunteer recruitment, integration and training. At the same time, the Volunteer Development Department will be working closely in 2009 with each of the key functional areas – hosting, sending, support, orientations, compliance, etc. to structure a plan for volunteer development which serves as a driver for the goals which must be accomplished in each of those areas for the organization.
