AFS is extremely excited to welcome back the visiting teachers to the U.S.! The main focus of the program will be for the teachers to observe U.S. classroom methods, classroom management styles and learn firsthand about U.S. culture as well as share their own culture.

Contents

Program Objectives

  • Opportunities to visit a range of educational institutions at the various levels, from kindergarten to high school, both private and public school systems.
  • Opportunities for Visiting Educators and AFS-USA volunteers to exchange ideas on various aspects of AFS programs in their respective countries
  • Social and educational excursions including: social activities organized by hosting chapter(s) (for example: attendance / participation in Chapter or Team meetings).
  • Opportunities for visiting international educators to live with an American family.

All participants will arrive and depart from NYC. There will be an overnight arrival and end-of-stay/debriefing orientation.

The arrival orientation will be designed to give participants an overview of American social and educational structures as well as an overview of AFS-USA’s volunteer composition. The end-of-stay/debriefing orientation will include a program evaluation as well as an opportunity for participants to reflect upon program outcomes, achievements and how they can productively utilize what they learned on the program once they return home.

Program Schedule

  • 2 day Arrival Orientation (Gateway NYC)
  • Travel to host community: Participants spend time observing classes, sharing their culture with students and educators at their host schools, spending time with their host families and learning about American culture.
  • 2 day End of Stay Orientation (Gateway NYC)


Hosting Opportunities for SH12

AFS-USA will be welcoming three visiting educators from Turkey during the SH cycle! The program dates are February 15 – May 3, 2012 which includes an Arrival Orientation and Debriefing Orientation in NYC. The educators are being sponsored by the American Turkish Society, based in NYC.
