Visiting teacher program
From AFSWiki
AFS term. Abbreviation is VTP. This program works much like our student program, except that those hosted are teachers and are expected to teach classes at school and otherwise participate in their school’s activities in a leadership role.
Pocket Money for Participants
Teachers receive room and board from their host families. Host schools in the US do not pay the teachers a salary, though they are encouraged to pay for lunches at school and transportation if possible. US schools are required to provide a mentor teacher, which does come with a time investment that the schools are, effectively, funding. Some PTSA's pay a stipend to a teacher for extras such as language classes after school.
Sometimes the teacher's own school (outside the US) pays a salary while teachers are in US or assist with cost of year, but policies vary widely. If teachers lack other financial resources, they are allowed to earn extra money from teaching-related activities such as language classes or tutoring. Babysitting and special chores for host families are also permitted, but they are not allowed by their visas to take other paying jobs to send money home. Any earnings may be used to pay for things like an occasional movie, supplies to take back home, or independent travel during vacations.
