User Pages
From AFSWiki
A user page shows information about a person who has an account on AFS Wiki. It frequently includes the person's real name, telephone number, email address, description of their affiliation with AFS, and photo.
For examples of existing user pages, start at the list of current AFS Wiki users and click on any account ID that is not shown in red.

Protocol
Creating user pages
Registered accounts will be created by requesting an account be established by a Wiki admin member.
- Registered accounts are limited to current registered AFS volunteers and Staff.
- Staff will be given an account by virtue of their request and AFS email address.
- Volunteers will be given an account after the Wiki admin member validates the registration on Global Link or on the request of a Staff member that is willing to sponsor the volunteer.
- The last line of the initial user page should be Account Requested by [[User:USERID of Requestor]] so that we have a record of the sponsor of another's user account or page, or of the individual if they are a registered user.
- If the volunteers registration can not be validated add them to the Category:Unregistered user.
Unregistered user accounts can be created by any registered Wiki member but must adhere to the following standards.
- First conduct a user look up to be sure this person doesn’t already have a registered account at http://www.afswiki.org/index.php/Special:Listusers
- Type the last name or any portion of it in the box labeled User: and click the Go button. You can enter the user ID if you wish but you will have to have precise spelling and case so the last name is a more thorough option.
- Only one page is permitted per person.
- If there is a registered account, do not create another page for other information but make your edits to the existing account.
- Create the page by typing User:JSmith for the new account of Joe Smith.
- Upper case U on User and no spaces before or after the colon
- Upper case first letter of the first name and full last name with upper case first letter.
- If the last name normally has more than one upper case letters change them to lower case. So Joe SmithCollins will have an ID or page title of JSmithcollins. Additionally, omit special characters in the name, such as apostrophes.
- If there is more than one person who would have the same ID under the standard (i.e. James Smith and John Smith would both be JSmith), add the next sequential number (with no intervening space) to the ID. (i.e. JSmith2). Real life examples: User:AEvans User:AEvans2
- Add the template Template:Unregistered User to the top of the page and add the page to the Category:Unregistered User.
Editing User Pages
- To edit your own user page you must be logged in to the AFS Wiki.
- Look at the very top right of any page you might be viewing. You will see a small person icon next to your user ID (the one you used to login).
- Click on your user ID, this will open your user page.
- Click on the edit tab at the top of the page. You probably have some basic information that you provided when requesting a wiki account. Please add to or correct any information by using the text editor box that will appear at the bottom of the page.
- If you are familiar with the wiki formatting codes that will give your page its design, jump right in and edit, it’s your page.
- If you need help with formatting refer to Wiki Formatting Codes on this wiki or when you need more advanced information refer to Wikipedia reference on how to edit a page.
- If you are stuck and need more direct help please send an email to any of the friendly system administrators, you can find their email address on their user page or you can sending an email to the whole group at sysadmin@afswiki.org.
- Before you click the Save page button at the bottom of the page, click the Show preview button to see if the page will look the way you want it to. If it does click the Save button, if not you can click your browsers Back button to cancel all changes.
- Don’t worry if you think something is messed up, there will always be someone here to help you put it back the way it was or get it the way you’d like.
Referencing users in articles elsewhere on the AFS Wiki
- When referencing volunteers or staff in articles, do not enter personal information as AFS considers this private
- Add a link to the user page with this format for Fred Smith. [[User:FSmith |Fred Smith]] which will give you Fred Smith on the page. Again no spaces before or after the colon
- Ensure when you use this format that you verify that there is a page for that user
- Do the lookup as described in paragraph 1.1.2.1.
- Conduct a lookup for the last name from the search dialog box in the left column of the Wiki page.
- If there isn’t a page you can use the steps in paragraph 1.1.2 to create the user page but please add the information intended for that user
- If you don’t need to link to a user page and you don’t have information for that user then just type the name without markup language as you would any other text.
