Description of the Transatlantic Orientation (TOE) Work Group

The Transatlantic Orientation Exchange is a collaboration between AFS-USA and AFS-Germany, the goal of which is to increase the level of intercultural learning of German and U.S. participants and their host families. AFS-USA and AFS-Germany are the two largest partners in the AFS network. Each year Germany sends approximately 450 students to the USA and hosts approximately 100 from the USA. In order to improve the quality of these exchanges, host family orientation materials were developed in a dialogue process between work groups in the USA and Germany. Each work group was be comprised of six volunteers and one staff member. This section of the Wiki contains a record of the group's work, related resources, and recommendations should this project, or some version thereof, be replicated for other target countries.

TOE Project Timeline

In order to document this project and process so that we may both evaluate this project and replicate the process for other countries, we have captured all the details here. Since the major events of the project quite naturally were our face-to-face meetings, the project has been split into separate WIKI pages about each of these major events plus the inter-meeting times where event pre-work or follow-up was being done. For each of these project periods we will capture details about the work that was done, evaluative comments, and resources which were helpful
