Qualifications
- Must be an AFS Returnee.
- Able to work 10 hours a week the entire length of the internship: Aug 2011-June 2012.
- Interns must have completed at least one semester of college education or currently attending a business/trade school or be current undergraduate or graduate students or have just graduated in the same year of the internship. The internship must be related to the intern’s field of study.
- Have access to internet, a computer and phone. Computer literacy, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, database, and Internet applications. (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, Google Docs, Google Maps, general database knowledge.
Overview The AFS-USA Returnee Initiative (RI) engages Returnees throughout the Returnee lifecycle by providing resources, support and opportunities for their own growth, development and connections thus encouraging a life-time of participation within the AFS community. The primary responsibility of the Returnee Initiative Communications Intern is to support the internal and external communications needs to promote resources and opportunities for Returnees to continue their growth while expanding the Returnee Initiative by integrating additional Returnees into AFS-USA as AFS Volunteers. The Returnee Initiative Communications Intern reports to a member of the Returnee Initiative Task Force (RITF).
Key Job Functions
- Engage with the Returnee Initiative as a leader. Assist in the recruitment, training and support of Returnee Initiative Leaders and Members. Carry-out the goals of the Returnee Initiative by leading projects and supporting other team members. Attend large group Returnee Initiative monthly meetings.
- In collaboration with the Returnee Initiative Task Force Member, co-lead the bi-weekly Returnee Initiative Communications Group meetings. Responsible for reserving phone and webinar resources, inviting participants, setting agenda, providing minutes and following-up on action items.
- Support the internal and external communications needs of the Returnee Imitative through emails, social media and the AFS-USA Wiki. Act as a primary admin for the AFS-USA Returnee Reconnect Facebook group and the Returnee Initiative section of the AFS Wiki. Support the additional social media expansion, in collaboration with the RITF and the Marketing Department.
- Work in close collaboration with the other Returnee Initiative Interns to promote opportunities being developed within the Returnee Initiative Network Development and Structure groups, as well as the Returnee Mentor and Ambassador projects.
- Drive the development and implementation of special projects in the Communications group, such as the Welcome Home Plan for new Returnees.
Knowledge and Skills
- Proven leadership, coordination and communication skills.
- Organized, action-oriented, strong communications skills: verbal, written and in-person.
- Familiarity and interest in communications, technology and social media.
- Able to work independently and remotely.
- A team player, coordinates with, delegates to and empowers volunteers at a distance.
- Experience volunteering or working with other volunteers.
Pay and Work Conditions
- This paid intern position receives $200/month.
- The intern will work remotely. If the intern lives near an AFS office (New York, Baltimore, St. Paul or Portland) they are welcome to work in the office. Work hours are will be negotiated with Managers taking into account school schedules. Some evening and weekend work will be required. Some domestic travel may also be required.
