Terms used in sending

There are terms used in AFS which are international terms that we all use. We don’t expect everyone to use them, but sometimes due to reports and documents sent out these terms are used. See also the more general list of AFS terms.

Terms used internationally

Program Length

YP - Year program
SM - Semester Program
IP - Intensive programs (summer programs which is what we use internally in the US)
VS - Very short summer programs

Program Content

ar - Arabic language study
cb - Congress Bundestag program
ch - Chinese language study
cs - community service
fr - French language Study
hs - homestay
ja - Japan language study
ls - NSLI program
oe - outdoor education
sc - school program
so - soccer program
sp - Spanish language study
tm - team mission
un - university program
ys - YES program

Program Cycle

SH - "Southern Hemisphere" - these programs depart beginning in January and continue through April. We refer to these as Spring Programs
NH - "Northern Hemisphere" - these programs depart beginning in June and continue through September. We refer to these as Summer or Fall Programs
