Chair-Elect Position Description:
The Chair-Elect is the individual elected by the registered volunteers within an AFS Team, to be the next Chair of the team. The Chair-elect serves for two years, as an assistant to the current Chair. Broad responsibilities include ensuring annual completion of Team agreement, managing the team’s annual quality assessment, and facilitating communication between the team leadership volunteers and other volunteers and chapters within the team.
Responsible to:
- Team Chair or Chapter Chair, other volunteers and staff who work with the team. The Chair-elect cannot be related to or live in the same house as the team’s Chair or Treasurer.
Time Required:
- Hours per month : 10-15
- Length of service time: Two years as Chair-elect, followed by two years as Chair
Competencies Required:
- Knowledge, experience and appreciation for the role of the volunteer including the challenges as well as opportunities facing AFS-USA’s volunteer sector.
- Ability to understand concepts and articulate ideas.
- Evidence of sufficient time and resources to meet the leadership expectations of this role.
- Detail oriented
- Flexible
- Dependable
- Excellent relationship and team-building skills
- Negotiating, mediating, recognizing others, problem-solving
- Ability to maintain open lines of communication with other volunteers as well as potential volunteers, schools and all level of staff members.

Training:
- Participation in yearly conferences/workshops, as offered
Materials Needed/Provided by AFS:
- A variety of materials available online at the AFS Wiki www.afswiki.org and Global Link https://usa.afsglobal.org
- Access to computer is required and necessary
Works With:
- Team or Chapter Chair
- Other volunteer leaders within the team
- Local chapters within the team
- Local volunteers within the team
- AFS-USA staff
Responsibilities:
- Learn about the role of Chair from the current team Chair
- Represent Team or Chapter Chair, as requested, when s/he is unable to participate in meetings, conference calls, or trainings that the Chair would normally be invited to attend.
- In collaboration with the Chair, provide leadership on behalf of the team to ensure team responsibilities are met, such as annual completion of Team or Chapter Charter Application, completion of annual team quality assessment, the team’s compliance to US Department of State regulations and CSIET and AFS-International standards.
- Coordinate communication within the team and among the other chapters and volunteers within the team.
- Carry out special assignments as requested by Team or Chapter Chair
