Events

The U.S. Transatlantic Orientation Exchange Work Group convened in Oviedo, Florida, for their first National Meeting. The meeting took place at the Canterbury Retreat, which offered affordable conference facilities, as well as, room and board at a very practical rate.

One committee member was absent, but the meeting proved to be industrious, as each member shared their drafts of handbook topics. In the weeks since our German meeting, each committee member had begun drafting handbook topics with respect to the American host family perspective. The materials we are creating are for the host family so we have to advise the host families how these cultural differences will impact their experience and that of their student.

Topics were assigned to the following members, who supplied copies to each of the other members for comments, suggestions and editing consistency:

  • Lynn/Sex and Nudity
  • Joann/Schools Systems
  • Al/Religion and Dating
  • Cia/Catherine - Family Roles and parent/stu relationship & Laws and Rules
  • Robin/Communication
  • Mary Kay Patriotism and Food Culture

Al had previous worked on a handbook template. Both he and Lynn would review the finalized handbook drafts for consistency. Al coached an informal Word class to acquaint us with the insertion of text boxes, quotations and clips that we would be including in our drafts.

We reviewed the activities that were piloted at the previous Bad Hersfeld meeting. We collectively qualified these activities into pertinance and value for orientations for both host families and students.

We reviewed the feedback from the Germany meeting to guide us in establishing an agenda for the upcoming International meeting in Chicago.

We revisited parking lot issues that arose during the German meeting.

We established deadlines for the final drafts of our subjects and were assigned activities to present at the Chicago meeting.

Had a checklist grid to make sure we had everything covered

Sent Germany summary report of the meeting Established questions for the panel discussion in Chicago, also what kinds of people would be appropriate to be on the panel (needed to ensure that the meeting would be in a place where there would be a sufficient body of volunteers to assist in setting up the panel, etc.)

Evaluation

The small group National meeting is a great time to further reflect on the cultural sensitivities that are being enhanced and developed in participants throughout this project, especially after the recent International meeting.

We began to use a checklist grid to collect quotes, quiz entries, activities etc. This tool may have been even more valuable if it had been introduced earlier in the project.
