Frequently asked questions about Summer Programs

Q: Are there special requirements for Summer Programs?
A: No, students still need to pass our general guidelines to be accepted into a program. Please keep in mind that summer programs do not have a GPA requirement, but students should have grades close to a 2.8 (on a 4.0 scale) with no failing classes on transcripts. Failing grades indicate a lack of motivation. Students must pass our medical screening as well.

Q: What can students expect on a summer program?
A: Each summer program also gives students the opportunity to live in a foreign country and explore a culture. They are shorter (4-6 weeks) and focus on the homestay experience, language study, community service, or outdoor education. For certain programs in the Southern Hemisphere, students may have the opportunity to go to school and observe their peers in an academic setting. Additionally, most partner countries encourage students to participate in chapter activities during their home stay experience. See the program catalog for exact details.

Q: What are the different types of summer programs and how can I explain them?
A: On most Homestay programs, students are immersed in the local culture by living and interacting alongside its citizens. Students can participate in community events and recreational activities, enjoy excursions to explore more of the country, and learn a new language through daily interaction. Homestay plus programs include all of those things too. Additionally, Homestay Plus programs have a short camp or focused activity that the students do together. For example, during the Costa Rica program, students take a five day trip to explore national parks and beaches. Language Study programs focus on learning a language and students attend classes for half days throughout their stay. Finally, during Community Service programs, students use their skills to work on a volunteer project.

Q: What type of students do summer programs attract?
A: Because the summer programs are shorter in length, our summer programs work well for students who are either worried about studying abroad for an entire year or students who can’t fit a longer program into their academic schedule. Students in private schools or IB programs tend to like summer programs because we can’t guarantee that students are placed in an IB program for an academic program.
