AFS-USA Volunteer Position Description

Responsible to: Sponsored Programs Orientation Leader

General Description: The orientation volunteer will work with the Sponsored Programs team on-site and/or off-site during either daytime or evening hours; volunteers will aid in a variety of projects including airport coordination, on-site event planning and off-site logistical planning.

Time Required:

  • Hours will vary; orientation volunteers are welcome to determine what type of commitment will work best within their personal schedule.
  • Length of commitment will vary; orientations vary in length depending on program and size of group. Orientation volunteers are not committed to extend their assistance for the duration of the event.

  • Ability to maintain open lines of communication with fellow volunteers as well as Sponsored Programs staff

Training:

  • No formal prior training is required

Materials/Resources Provided by AFS:

  • Volunteer Registration materials & manual available online at afswiki.org
  • Opportunity to join orientation volunteer conference calls prior to the event
  • Orientation volunteer mailings sent prior to the event containing specific event information
  • Meals and local transportation during event provided by AFS.

    • Fellow orientation volunteers

Responsibilities:

  • Directing students at the airport as they arrive/depart
  • Checking on flight times
  • Assisting students with shuttles/busses
  • Aiding in a various on-site projects
  • Setting up/working at the registration and/or departure desk
  • Organizing games for early arriving students
  • Directing traffic
  • Answering student questions
  • Organizing travel information
  • Arranging student information
  • Sorting passports/international flight information
  • Providing general logistical guidance to all students and fellow volunteers
