Justifying the Cost

(more work needed here!)
Compare to the combined cost of the following:

  • learning a language by taking college classes
  • an international vacation including airfare
  • health insurance for a year
  • a summer camp

Costs of competing programs

  • (needed: links here to other exchanges, Outward Bound, etc)
  • What's a good answer to the question, "Why should I go with AFS for $10,000/year when Rotary's year-abroad program costs under $3500/year?"
  • As quoted in USA Today, "[Gap-year program] costs vary widely but often run $10,000 to $20,000 for a year of fee-based programs and living costs, according to Holly Bull of the Center for Interim Programs, a gap-year consultancy in Princeton, N.J."

For some documents to bring along, check out The AFS Value Package.

A good answer is: You get what you pay for. AFS has a long history of exchange programs. We spend time and money training our volunteers. Every student has a liaison that checks up on them regularly and fill out a report once a month.
