Position Description
Contents |
Objectives
- Assess the viability of a candidate for an AFS intercultural experience, as well as the receptivity and support of the sending family
- As a representative of AFS, provide a quality face to face interaction with a potential sending student and their family
Required Responsibilities:
- Be a registered AFS volunteer
- Contact the student and the parents to arrange a mutually convenient interview time when parents will also be present (unless it is indicated to you that your local area handles arranging interviews differently)
- Conduct the interview
- Complete and submit a well-written Sending Interview Form Confidential Placement Summary (sending interview form).
Beneficial Responsibilities:
- Review the student's online application in order to prepare for the interview
Time Required:
- 90 minutes, excluding travel
- Periodic, when needed
Responsible to:
- AT Sending Interview Coordinator and/or AT Sending Coordinator
Competencies Required:
- Ability to make phone calls and other logistics arrangements
- Ability to listen and ask open ended questions, create a safe zone for honest dialogue, and to address potential issues to aid the interview reader in understanding unusual circumstances
- Able to complete the Sending Interview Form, preferably electronically
- Have general knowledge of what it takes to be an exchange student and supportive sending family
- Able to drive to student's house (unless public transport is available)
- Ability to respect the confidential nature of interviews
Beneficial Competencies:
- Familiar with the AFS Full Application and how to find the program specific information contained within www.usa.afs.org
Training
- Complete the online sending interviewer training module (available through Global Link - click "Resources," then "AFS USA Online Training," then sign in, then click "Sending Courses."), or
- Do an in-person training that covers information that is equivalent to the training module (such trainings usually occur at the local level, with an experienced sending interviewer bringing along a new interviewer to an actual student interview to see how it is done).
Beneficial Training:
- If at all possible, go with an experienced interviewer for the first interview
- "AFS Path: Application and Beyond" Online Workshop (Available at www.afsusa.org)
Works with:
- Volunteer
- AT or Chapter Sending Interview Coordinator
- Staff (typically only when there is not a local sending coordinator or extenuating circumstances)
- Sending Team Manager
- Student Services Adviser
