AFS-USA Volunteer Position Description
Sending Gateway Orientation Volunteer
The Sending Gateway Orientation Volunteer is responsible for assisting the Sending Gateway Orientation Coordinator with the logistics of the orientation and may serve as a replacement Orientation Group Leader should one be needed on the day of the event.
Responsible to: Sending Gateway Orientation Coordinator
Works with: Gateway Orientation Coordinator and Group Leaders, Travel and Logistics staff
Time Required:
- 4-6 hours training in preparation for duties including reviewing Leader’s Guide and meeting with Orientation Coordinator
- Approximately 36 hours on the days of the event.
Competencies Required:
- Passion for the AFS Mission
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently
- Flexibilty
- Physical stamina – ability to put in long hours over a period of 2-3 days
Responsibilities:
- Participate in the mandatory Orientation Group Leader training, facilitated by the Orientation Coordinator prior to the event.
- Assist in the set up of the orientation on the day of the event, i.e. posting signage, arranging chairs, collating print materials, etc.
- Assist in on-site registration of students.
- Serve as an overnight hall monitor for a 2-4 hour period during the orientation.
- Accompany individual participants to hospital, clinic, pharmacy, etc. as needed.
- Shop for snacks and water as needed during orientation.
- Serve as a replacement Orientation Group Leader should there be a no-show (optional).
- Provide feedback on and suggestions for improvement to the orientation content, organization, training, facilities, etc. to the Orientation Coordinator immediately after the event.
- Assist in keeping the orientation site tidy during the event.
