Overview

As part of our commitment to sending great students abroad, AFS offers both need- and merit-based scholarships. Most of our scholarship funds are distributed via the Global Leaders need-based financial aid process.

Scholarships allow us to extend the reach of our mission by:

  • Enabling students to go abroad who otherwise could not
  • Providing a tool for making new connections & increasing the visibility of AFS

Scholarships also help us…

  • Attract and recognize high caliber students
  • Achieve organizational goals (longer and earlier)
  • Support our partners abroad & contribute to network health (by encouraging flexibility)
  • Recognize & reward commitments to AFS (AFS family)

Currently Available Scholarships

  • Global Leaders Financial Aid: Global Leaders is AFS’s main scholarship program, offering partial need based scholarships to qualified applicants. Global Leaders scholarship applications are accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis, and we encourage students to submit all need based scholarship application materials at once. Candidates are urged to apply as early in the school year as possible—the earlier your application is reviewed, the larger the pool of available aid. The ideal time to apply for scholarships is between the preliminary application and full application. Please visit the public website for full details on the Global Leaders application process, including current award ranges and FAQs.
  • Global Leaders Merit Scholarship: Global Leaders Merit is a merit based scholarship awarding a lump sum prize to students applying for a year program in one of the five following countries: China, Egypt, India, Russia and Turkey. It may be combined with Global Leaders financial aid awards. Please visit the public website for full details on the Global Leaders Merit award amount, application process and deadline.
  • Vaya a América Latina Scholarship: Vaya a América Latina is a merit based scholarship that covers 50% of the tuition costs for summer programs to Costa Rica and Argentina. It may not be combined with any Global Leaders awards, but students may apply for both. Please visit the public website for full details on the Vaya a América Latina application process and deadlines.
  • Viaggio Italiano Scholarship: Viaggio Italiano is a merit based scholarship awarding a lump sum prize to students applying for a year program in Italy. It may be combined with Global Leaders financial aid awards. Please visit the public website for full details on the Viaggio Italiano award amount, application process and deadline.
  • BP Global Citizens of Tomorrow Scholarship: The BP Global Citizens of Tomorrow scholarships are partially need- and partially merit-based and cover the full cost of tuition for students applying for a year program to one of the following five countries: Brazil, China, India, Malaysia and South Africa. To be eligible, students must reside in the greater Chicago, IL or greater Houston, TX areas and must demonstrate a strong interest in at least one of the "STEM" fields of study: science, technology, engineering and math. Please visit the public website for full details on the BP Global Citizens of Tomorrow eligibility requirements, application process and deadlines.
  • Scholarships by State: Students living in particular areas may be eligible for locally funded scholarships and financial aid from AFS. Please visit the public website for a list of the areas (states, counties, cities) with access to these local resources, along with descriptions of any relevant application processes and deadlines.
  • AFS Family Award: A small award given to applicants whose families have demonstrated consistent support for the AFS mission. It is granted to any student who is an AFS returnee, the child or sibling of an AFS returnee, the child of a registered volunteer, a former or current AFS host family, or the descendant of an AFS Ambulance Driver. Send an email with the name of the student applying for the award and the name, year and type of their AFS Family connection to scholarships@afs.org to have the award applied. Please visit the public website for details about current award amount.
  • Sponsored Programs for Sending: AFS works in partnership with some other sponsored programs. Find more details about the NSLI-Y, YES Abroad, Congress Bundestag, and Faces of America programs here.
