Overview

By becoming a Returnee Ambassador, Returnees share their AFS story in their community. As registered volunteers, Returnee Ambassadors have the opportunity to speak to school and community members about their AFS experience, while raising awareness about AFS programs. The Returnee Ambassador volunteer role is an provides Returnees the opportunity to stay involved with AFS, while gaining the leadership skills to organize and host events. AFS Returnee Ambassadors share their AFS Story:

  • In Schools: Offer to speak to a language class, world geography class or history class from your local community (preferably schools you have already attended) about the country you visited. Ambassadors will create a personal presentation, which follows the guidelines used in their training, as well as, the AFS-USA presentation template, to share their experience abroad.
  • In Your Community Give a 30 minute presentation about your experience abroad. Host the event at your local community center, library, church, city hall, school district office, etc. Ambassadors will create a personal presentation, which follows the guidelines used in their training, as well as, the AFS-USA presentation template, to share their experience abroad.

This project is currently managed by the Outreach Specialist, Kirsten Snyder. Please contact ksnyder@afs.org to find out how to get involved.

The Process

Commitment

To be eligible to participate one must be a Returnee from the past five years, be a registered volunteer and able to commit to holding three local events within 1 year. It is anticipated that the local events will take up to 1 - 1/2 hours for the returnee to share their story and answer questions at the end of the presentation. Returnees who complete their three local events, can choose to do more events or volunteer with another returnee outreach project.

Training

Returnees are required to attend an online training session, which will introduce them to how to give a presentation about their AFS experience, how to set up a presentation with their local high school or community center and how to use social media, such as flyers, email, postings, press releases, postcards, etc, to advertise about their event. Also the training will cover how to direct attendees to learn more about getting involved with AFS such as sending, hosting, and volunteering.

Leads

Through the local events organized by a returnee, they will get interested students and parents about AFS. The Returnee Ambassador will direct them to the AFS-USA website for more information as well as opportunities to sign up for Online Info Sessions provided by Outbound Programs.

Resources to Review

Before your presentation you will want to review the following resources to give students/parents an up to date picture of current AFS programs. However, it is not your roll to memorize everything here, but rather it is a resource for you to refer to when students or parents ask these questions.

We appreciate all you give back to AFS! Keep up the great work!
