Overview
The Regional Council members represent the volunteer Teams located in a region designated by AFS, together with key AFS-USA regional staff, to the AFS National Council and to AFS-USA. The Regional Council members review and provide regional policy guidance to the Teams for international exchange activities such as sending and hosting, and volunteer recruitment, training, recognition, and retention within the region, among other regions and nationally as requested. The Regional Council members conduct their activities within the mission and core values of AFS and the National Council.
Eligibility, Term, and Method of Selection
A Regional Council member must be an Team leader and a registered volunteer with AFS. Terms on the Regional Council are for two (2) years. Members are selected by their Teams. Each member is eligible to serve one additional consecutive term if selected again by the Team. Members who are originally selected as replacement to a term with less than one year remaining shall not have that term counted for purposes of this paragraph. Members are eligible for additional non-consecutive terms of service on the Regional Council if selected by Teams. One half of the members of the Regional Council will be selected by their Teams in odd-numbered years, with the remaining members selected by the remaining half of the Teams in even-numbered years.

Responsibilities
- Be committed to the AFS mission and values
- Attend all in-person meetings each year (expenses paid by AFS)
- Attend monthly teleconference calls
- Prepare for all meetings as requested by the Council
- Find a substitute from his/her AT leadership for any meetings he/she is unable to attend who is prepared to act as a proxy
- Bring issues from Team to Regional Council
- Ensure that new policies/initiatives are understood and followed in the Team represented
- Provide timely team reports from Teams to aid in Regional Council decision making
- Be an advocate for AFS
- Be an advocate for volunteers
- Participate in the ongoing work of the Council
- Commit to service estimated at 4 - 6 hours per month
- Attend training events
- Share minutes of Regional Council meetings with Team in a timely manner
- Share decisions and rationale for them with Team
- Learn policies and procedures of Regional Council
