Overall Objective
Prioritize and perform the revision of AFS Hosting and Sending Orientation materials ensuring that they include:
- clear and concise objectives;
- user-friendly delivery methods;
- a selection of experiential and other activities that appeal to a range of learning styles;
- tips on how to involve returnees in the planning and implementation of orientations
- tools to evaluate the orientation.
In addition the group will serve as a sounding board for organization-wide decisions re. orientation content.
Specific Objectives
The group will coordinate/perform the revision of hosting and sending orientation materials on a schedule to be determined by the group.

Method of Election/Appointment
The Orientation Advisory group is organized by the Intercultural Education and Quality Specialist. The chair of the Advisory group will be chosen from among all of the members of the group—both volunteers and staff. Membership on the advisory group is by invitation to volunteers nominated by staff or other volunteers due to their specific experience in the functional area under consideration. As much as possible one volunteer member should be a current National Council volunteer.
Committee Term
Members are asked to serve at minimum a term of one year, and a maximum of three years.
Methodology
- The committee will meet by phone conference monthly or as needed prior to key deadlines.
- There will be regular email correspondence.
- The progress and outcomes of this committee will be regularly communicated to orientation volunteers and volunteers in leadership positions.
Accountability
The Orientation Advisory Group will be accountable to the National Council and to the National Orientation Staff in the following areas including but not limited to:
- any changes, improvements to be made in processes and procedures within the area of orientation that impact volunteers
- the revision or creation of orientation materials
