Global Connections and Exchange:
One LENS Program in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam
AFS-USA is excited to announce an exciting new collaboration with the Global Nomads Group (GNG) in launching the One LENS program, which will provide project-based opportunities for students and educators from the United States, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam to develop media literacy, intercultural, and leadership skills. Students, aged 15-17, will learn firsthand about the important role ordinary citizens can play in the 21st century as contributors to, participants in, and consumers of media. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State/ Office of Citizen Exchanges, Youth Programs Division.
In line with AFS-USA’s commitment to experiential learning, this project will incorporate participatory film-making, physical exchanges, media literacy workshops and online project-based networking to engage youth in active mutual dialogue and empower them with media tools to support their creative process.
Program Details
AFS Malaysia, through their collaboration with the Malaysia Federation for the Deaf, is paired with the Indiana School for the Deaf, the Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach is working with a school in Indonesia, and New Design High School in New York City is partnering with Vietnam. Two to four student representatives and one educator from each school will be selected to make a three week, in-person visit to their partner school in the U.S. and partake in a variety of activities focusing on media literacy in a Web 2.0 age. Students and educators from the United States will also visit their partner schools in Asia in this reciprocal exchange. The exchanges will culminate with a local media festival, where students will have the opportunity to showcase their public service announcements or digital stories.
