Create an environment conducive to volunteer retention. Avoid the costly “revolving door” of people who lose their initial motivation and enthusiasm.

The latest Everyone Ready® online volunteer management training topic, It Takes Two to Tango: Building Successful Relationships between Volunteers and Paid Staff became available on Monday, October 17. All AFS-USA volunteers and staff can access the monthly Everyone Ready® topics online, via the "Resources" tab in Global Link.

Learning Objectives

After reading this Guide and discussing its content, participants will be able to:

  • Diagnose the reasons for possible tension between paid and volunteer staff (and between leadership and other volunteers), separating myth from fact.
  • Clarify the different roles of volunteers and employees.
  • Identify simple, practical steps to develop true teamwork.

This topic will be the main Everyone Ready topic through Sunday, November 20. On Monday November 21, the new topic, Keeping Volunteers Motivated (So They Stay!) will launch. At that time, the "It Takes Two to Tango" topic will be moved to the Archived Topics section of the "Everyone Ready" main page.

Upcoming "Everyone Ready" topics are as follows and become available on the 3rd Monday of each month:

  • Keeping Volunteers Motivated (So They Stay!), Seminar, Nov 2011
  • Turning Single Days of Service into Longer Volunteer Involvement, Self-Instruction Guide, Dec 2011
  • Building and Sustaining Strong Volunteer Leadership, Seminar, Jan 2012
  • Reports with Clout: Showing the Impact of Volunteers, Self-Instruction Guide, Feb 2012
