AFS term meaning the family who has sent or are sending a son or daughter on an AFS program. Abbreviation is natfam. It consists of

  • natpars, or nats (natural parents):
    • natma (natural mother),
    • natpa (natural father),
  • natsibs (natural siblings):
    • natsis (natural sister)
    • natbro (natural brother)

Note that AFS uses the term "natural" family/father/mother/etc, to refer to the persons responsible for the student. This is not to be confused with the biological term "natural" family/father/mother/etc. For example, if a student is legally adopted, the student's adopted family would be considered as their "natural" family by AFS. Volunteers and staff should be sensitive to the use of this term and whenever possible, use the term "sending family" since some parents who have adopted children find the term "natural" family to be offensive.
