AFS National Day of Service is a wonderful occasion not only to give back, but also to promote our mission and to raise the visibility of AFS. One way to do that is by connecting with your local media. Your project could make a great story or photo in the local paper!

We've provided you a template of a press release that you can fill out and send to local newspapers, radio stations and TV stations. Use this template as a guide in writing your own. Please replace the items in parentheses with local information.

Tips for working with the media

• Send your press release as soon as possible. This is very important. The media needs plenty of advance warning to plan to cover your event.

• Who to contact: Email a general email address, which can be found on the media outlet's website, or simply call and ask who you should speak to. If you send an email, it might help to follow up with a phone call.

• If you are sending an email, feel free to include a friendly message about why you think the event is newsworthy in addition to including the official press release.

• If the media does attend, remember that anything that happens at your event could appear publicly.

• Remember the photo desk. If no one can come, take good quality photos yourself and send them in with the event information.
