AFS-USA Volunteer Position Description

National Council Chair

The National Council Chair advises and manages volunteer representatives who represent their region on the National Council and overseas the volunteer/staff relationship within the National Council.

Responsible to: All AFS volunteers and AFS staff members

Time Required:

  • Hours per month : 20+ per month
  • Availability during working hours
  • Length of service time: 2 year minimum commitment

Competencies Required:

  • Detail oriented
  • Flexible
  • Dependable
  • Telephone skills
  • Comfortable using computer, specifically online services.

Training:

  • National Council Orientation – 2-3 hours
  • Participation in yearly conferences/workshops offered

Materials Needed/Provided by AFS:

  • Variety of materials available online at afswiki.org
  • Access to computer required and necessary

Relationships:

  • Excellent relationship and team-building skills
  • Negotiating, mediating, recognizing others, problem-solving
  • Ability to maintain open lines of communication with other volunteers as well as potential volunteers, schools and Regional and National Staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in collaborative environment with variety of personalities and cultures
  • Ability to interact effectively and persuasively with national/regional/ community members, school officials and others

Responsibilities (or tasks):

  • Plan and coordinate regular National Council meetings.
  • Ensure information is distributed/communicated within the National Council members.
  • Work with National Council members to ensure that goals are achieved.
  • Delegation of work within the National Council and regional volunteers
  • Serve as the key link between staff and regional volunteers
  • Delegate tasks for special events as necessary
  • Provide opportunities for frequent contact by volunteers and the National council
  • Provide ongoing motivation and support the recognition of volunteers
