NSLI for Youth 2011 Interview Update

AFS Volunteers are interviewing 1,369 NSLI for Youth semi-finalists in January! The first 90 interviews were completed on December 18th in Oklahoma and Washington, DC, and now that the holidays are behind us, Interviews are going full steam ahead. The deadline for all NSLI-Y interviews is February 7, 2011. This deadline is more strict than in previous years, because we want to ensure that the final selection process, which includes a review of the interview form, can be completed in a timely manner, so that in turn students can be notified about their scholarships as early as possible. In order to reach this deadline, we will assign students in unresponsive areas to phone interviews. If your team has not scheduled an interviews for NSLI-Y applicants in your area, please contact the NSLI-Y Interviews Team at 1(800) 876-2376, ext. 1165 or NSLIYinterviews@afs.org. If your team has several dates to choose from, we encourage you to schedule interviews as soon as possible, so that we can more quickly submit the interview forms to be reviewed.

Finalists and alternates will be announced in early March, over a two week rolling basis. Announcements are generally made in batches of language and program lengths. This means that some students will hear the outcomes before others, so we encourage students, parents, and invested volunteers to be encouraging during the announcement phase. When students hear that they are a finalist, they will also learn which language, program and sending organization they are assigned to. It's a lot of information in one simple email!
