Note to reader and potential contributors: This page still needs general content. What follows is details regarding a specific circumstance.

Sometimes hosted students are invited to participate in non-AFS-sponsored, short-term events during which they will stay with another host family not currently registered as an AFS volunteer. Students should ask for permission before participating. Here is one way to help them participate.

A local volunteer can makes a request for mid-stay travel via email to the Travel and Logistics Coordinator by providing the dates that the students are going to be away from their host families and not staying with a registered AFS volunteer. The request should list the students, contain a description of what they'll be doing, and request travel waivers. The Travel and Logistics Coordinator will write our partner countries of the students to request a waiver for each student, signed by their Natural Family. The waiver will be placed in their file with AFS. The students themselves would not be calling the AFS staff: in an effort to streamline communication, it would just the volunteer providing their names. It's not a difficult process but, depending on the time that it takes to locate parents overseas by our partner AFS offices, it can take a week or two (e.g., a student from Thailand whose parents don't have a phone... but that doesn't happen very often).
