Mary Porterfield's World Congress Trip Report
From AFSWiki
Bridging Cultures: Acting on the Vision was the theme for the 22nd annual AFS World Congress, truly reflected the activity that took place in Malaysia from October 20 through the 24th. AFS-USA was well represented by 5 AFS-USA Board members including myself, staff members Jorge Castro, Kristen Bates, Keri Dooley, and facilitators Carolyn Rehn, Jim Laden, and Wendy Hyatt. AFS-USA presented our new business plan to the World Congress on Thursday.
Acting on the Vision--There were a variety of large and small group discussions throughout the week leading to action steps for us to take as we move toward our AFS International Vision 2020. Strategic goals for 2013 were analyzed and modified. We heard from Tachi Cazal, AFS International President, and Brian Atwood, Chair of the AFS Board of Trustees. Partner to Partner (P2P) meetings took place between AFS country partners as staff and board members negotiated the matrix for students to be hosted and sent in the future as well as discussion of other potential projects between partners.
Bridging Cultures--there were about 180 participants from 50 countries who spoke 30 different languages. We were given glimpses into the vast cultural background of this diverse country through a mock wedding ceremony at the opening banquet and an evening spent in the home of an AFS Malaysian volunteer. A trip to downtown Kuala Lumpur let us see the Petronas Twin Towers and the KL Tower plus attend a fashion show highlighting batik, the natural handicraft. Throughout the week we were given tips on Malaysian culture including: dress modestly; shake hands with hosts by grasping both hands, bow your head, then bring your hands to your heart to reflect heartfelt greetings while looking into their eyes and smiling warmly; take off your shoes when entering a home; and point using your thumb because pointing with your index finger is considered rude.
The World Congress ended with a reception at the home of the United States Ambassador James Keith [1]and a Gala Banquet. Next year the World Congress will be held in Puerto IguazĂș, Argentina.
