Also known as local unit. Local AFS groups consist of one or more volunteers in a community who implement AFS programs in that community by hosting and sending participants on AFS programs and who work to assure that the principles and standards of AFS are upheld. Since informally organized local teams are not a legal entity, they are not required to file annual rosters and financial reports. See also chapter and Team.

Local group are diverse organizational structures currently known in various parts of the country as AFS Chapters, Clubs, Districts, returnee groups, or one or more AFS volunteers in a locality, coordinating the AFS program for participants under the auspices of AFS-USA.

Local Group Requirements

  1. Be acknowledged by the team as part of the organizational structure
  2. Follow the organizational structure, procedures, and policies established by the AFS-USA Board
  3. Contribute to the AFS Mission
  4. Maintain the quality standards set forth by AFS-USA

Local Group Responsibilities

  1. Serve as the point of entry for persons to become AFS volunteers and participants
  2. Serve as the first line of AFS program support for participants
  3. Report program and financial information to the team
  4. Receive organizational and program guidance and assistance from the team
  5. Raise funds at the local level to the extent possible for local operations and scholarships in accordance with AFS-USA fund raising guidelines
