The AFS Network Intercultural Learning (ICL) Work Group met for its second annual in-person meeting in Milan, Italy from 11-12 April 2011. Against the backdrop of the "Ensuring our Expertise" Network-wide ICL strategy, this meeting focused on evaluating Network ICL efforts over the last year, presenting status updates on current ICL-related projects being led by AFS International, and making solid plans for 2011 and beyond.

In addition to endorsing the current strategy, the key work items that came out of the meeting were:

  • Guiding questions for the development of national/Partner ICL Strategies. The provocative questions drafted by the group will facilitate Partners in the creation of their own organizational ICL Strategies.
  • Organizational profiles in regards to ICL. Six profiles were developed to identify the state of Partners in relation to the commitment to and development of ICL in their AFS organizations and their society. Related measures are expected to be created to gauge and review ICL efforts Partner-by-Partner.
  • Network ICL research guidelines. These guidelines (intended for AFS Network-wide initiatives) will assist us in selecting strategic research topics, accepting and/or cultivating research alliances, and expanding our reputation as an educational institution.
  • Meeting with Kaleidoscope Project researchers. Meeting with Nicolas Geeraert and Kali Daemes of Essex University (UK), to receive update on study and preliminary results.

We look forward to sharing these items with the Network over the coming months, including at upcoming regional events. Kind greetings on behalf of the entire AFS Network ICL Work Group, Melissa Liles
