Introduction

The purpose of a Hosting Orientation Work Group (HOW) is to build upon the success of the initial work group (called the Transatlantic Orientation Exchange Work Group) that was set up to produce materials that would help increase the intercultural understanding of participants and host families between a country pair. There are two versions of a work group. An "intensive" version would consist of a pair of groups, one in each country of the pair, who would assist each other in developing an understanding of the cultural differences between the two countries and produce a pair of complementary materials for use in each country (i.e. host families in country X hosting students from country Y and host families in country Y hosting students from country X). The abbreviated version of the work group would only produce a manual for host families in country X hosting students from country Y, although they would certainly consult with those who understood both cultures, i.e. returnees, etc.

Timeline

Following the success of the TOE work group and project wrapup in the fall of 2008, the participants of this project were eager to share their experience by helping to lead additional work group. Because a successful project requires a certain amount of funding, the initial set of work groups were set up for some of the YES (Youth Exchange and Study) partners at the meeting with the YES partners in March 2009. The YES budget funded these next set of work groups.

Handbook Framework

In order to have a consistency in presentation and use, we need to have an overall framework for all the orientation materials that are produced with these projects. The development and discussion of this topic is located here.
