Host-Family Post-Arrival Orientation Overview

While host partners are not required to provide a Host Family Post-Arrival Orientation, it is a good idea to involve host families in the Post-Arrival Orientation if at all possible. This Orientation occurs on different dates in every region of the country. The date is set by each individual Team. However, as a general rule, this Orientation is usually held approximately 6 weeks after the students arrive. At this stage both host family members and participants are likely to have questions or concerns about the exchange experience and the Post-Arrival orientation is designed to help air and address these issues. It also serves as a time for host parents to connect with each other and build a network of support that will be beneficial to them as the year progresses.

Host Family Post-Arrival Orientation Resources

AFS-USA does not currently have a Leader's Guide for this orientation but staff and volunteers are in the process of creating one based on the objectives stated above. If you have Post-Arrival orientation activities for host families that you would like to be considered for inclusion in the new Leader's Guide, please post them in the section entitled Host Family Post-Arrival Orientation Best Practices - Activities.

As always, Orientation staff and volunteers welcome your feedback on these materials. While the documents are not currently protected from edits, we would prefer that changes (other than minor corrections and typos) be suggested as outlined in how to provide feedback on orientation materials. In this way we will be better able to review and keep track of suggested changes.
