This guide is designed to provide you with an overview of funding sources, jobs, internships, books, and organizations in a variety of fields related to many of the areas of study you have pursued at Friends World Program/Global College. This guide is not comprehensive and should not be considered definitive. However, it may give you some ideas and direction as you explore a variety of opportunities in your chosen field. AFS

The AFS program is an international, voluntary, not-for-profit and non-governmental organization working towards providing intercultural learning opportunities in order to assist people in gaining the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary in today’s society. There are multiple volunteer options available that work towards promoting AFS activities in a variety of schools and communities.

Americorps

Americorps is a national network of programs working towards servicing the critical needs of various communities throughout the United States. There are three different sections of the Americorps including State and National, Vista, and National Civilian Community Corps – each provides opportunities for part-time and full-time direct or indirect service throughout the nation. Participants earn a monthly stipend, qualify for a loan deferment, and receive an education award of $4,725 to pay for qualified loans after the year of service.

Carl Duisberg Society (CDS)

Carl Duisberg Society is an international non-profit organization that encourages intercultural understanding through international exchange and professional development programs in an array of international locations including Argentina, Germany, Russia, Spain and the United States. CDS programs offer different international internship, professional fellowships, work-study programs, and other international opportunities.

Alliances Abroad

Alliances Abroad provides tailored internships, work opportunities, as well as teaching and volunteer programs for both students and graduates within the United States and abroad. The Alliances Abroad website provides information on the different opportunities and the costs for specific programs.

AIPT: Association for International Practical Training

AIPT offers educational and professional experiences through an exchange program both internationally (for American students) and in the United States (for foreign students). The International Association for Exchange for Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) provides opportunities to college students focusing on technical subjects, although there are opportunities for some assistance to non-technical students as well. For recent graduates and professionals, the Prearranged Training Program is offered in most career fields. Students and recent graduates are generally required to have knowledge of the language where the training will occur.

The Council on International Educational Exchange is a non-governmental U.S. organization that focuses on international education. CIEE works to develop and direct programs for high school and university students in addition to educators to study and teach abroad.

European Council of International Schools

The European Council of International Schools (ECIS) is a collaborative network promoting the ideals and best practice of international education. ECIS leads in addressing significant current and future educational and global issues in support of its membership in Europe and worldwide.

Friends of World Teaching

Friends of World Teaching maintains updated lists of all American community schools, international schools, church-related and industry-supported schools, private, and government schools; listings for clinics and hospitals where American and Canadian educators and nurses may seek employment.

InterAction (orgs doing intl development)

InterAction is the largest coalition of U.S.-based international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) focused on the world’s poor and most vulnerable people. Collectively, InterAction’s more than 165 members work in every developing country. In the U.S., they offer J-1 Visa programs and an H-2B Visa program.

IREX is an international nonprofit organization providing leadership and innovative programs to improve the quality of education, strengthen independent media, and foster pluralistic civil society development. IREX provides a variety of programs, and grant and host opportunities.

Japan Exchange & Teaching Program (JET)

The Japan Exchange and Teaching Program seeks to help enhance internationalization in Japan by promoting mutual understanding between Japan and other nations. The program also aims to improve foreign language education in Japan and to encourage international exchanges at the local level by fostering ties between Japanese youth and foreign youth. Participants of the program can work as Assistant Language Teachers, Coordinators for international Relations, or Sports Exchange Advisors. Language Corps

Language Corps offers comprehensive programs of training, placement and logistical support for talented people interested in travel, internationalism, and teaching abroad. They provide unique training combining TESOL certification, local language and cultural immersion, and guaranteed placement into paid teaching assignments with select schools – all toward the end of empowering their teachers to thrive as professionals abroad. Although Language Corps offers a minimal salary at each location, there is a substantial program fee for most programs offered.

One Small Planet

One Small Planet began in 1996 when the co-founder, Courtney Wise, was working as Curriculum Director for Kid's College, an ESL institute located in Seoul, Korea. Together with her now husband and co-founder, Blair Cook, Courtney wanted to provide a resource for others who wanted to learn about working and traveling abroad. In the spirit of the original website concept, they still have a page devoted to General Information About Going Abroad that they've filled with links and books with information on working, studying, volunteering and traveling abroad. This page is useful for those just beginning their search for information to link to sites with extensive databases of international opportunities.

Peace Corps

Peace Corps Volunteers serve in 74 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe, and the Middle East. Collaborating with local community members, Volunteers work in areas like education, youth outreach and community development, the environment, and information technology.

Established in 1972, CSU (the commercial subsidiary of HECSU) has recently changed its name to Graduate Prospects. The name was changed to more clearly communicate the relationship between the highly successful Prospects brand and the organization behind it. Working in partnership with the most prominent official bodies in the field of Higher education, Graduate Prospects has been bringing students, graduates and recruiters together for over 30 years.

VSO was voted top international development charity in the International Aid and Development category at the Charity Awards 2004 for its work in promoting innovative approaches to globalizing volunteering. They are actively recruiting volunteers all the time.
