Global LEAP Educator Exchange
From AFSWiki
The AFS Global LEAP Educator Exchange, sponsored by the Fulbright Branch in the US Department of State, was designed for secondary school administrators from Bolivia, Ecuador and Venezuela. The three-week U.S. program took place in Boise, Idaho and provided participants with the knowledge and skills needed to evaluate and address the needs of their students, schools, and communities within their respective countries. Participants focused on strategies, resources, and research needed to develop curriculum for their schools. During the 3-weeks in Boise, participants also developed curriculum (under the guidance of a resource referred to as “Project Citizen”) which was implemented in their respective schools upon their return home. Project Citizen “is a curricular program for middle, secondary, and post-secondary students, youth organizations, and adult groups that promote competent and responsible participation in local and state government. The program helped participants learn how to monitor and influence public policy. In the process, they developed support for democratic values and principles, tolerance, and feelings of political efficacy.” Please visit http://www.civiced.org/index.php?page=introduction for more information. It is expected that the developed curriculum will create a multiplier effect on a national level within each participant’s home country.
AFS-USA collaborated with the Idaho Human Rights Education Center and the Center for Civic Education to implement this program.
