Country Information
- AFS Country Code: GER
- See http://www.usa.afs.org/usa_en/view/8007 for more information on Germany.
Placement
- Age requirement: 16.0-18.6 years for school programs.
- Language requirement: Basic English requited; German knowledge would be fine. German is a pre-req for the school programs. The language training takes place locally and depends on the local chapter's arrangement ( i.e. small group, private teacher, school teachers). As the ability to communicate in German helps the students to integrate, AFS GER supports the students in taking language classes. AFS GER refunds up to a certain amount, which students may request for this purpose (it may vary from year to year and depends also on the student's language proficiency upon arrival). The transportation to the course is paid by AFS. Refunds for German certificates etc. is not given.
- Health restrictions:
- Graduates: Students already enrolled in university can't be accepted. Germany prefers no graduated students; if students are graduated and have not started university, then an Academic Commitment is needed along with the application.
- Smoking: Smoking is not permitted for students under the age of 18. Students over 18 who smoke are more difficult to place.
- Religion/Spirituality: Students requiring regular access to church, other than Catholic or Protestant, or have any specific requests might be more difficult to place
- Dietary Restrictions:
- Dress:
- Vaccinations: German schools require only tetanus, polio, diphtheria, and measles.
