An interested and conscientious advisor serves an important role in creating and maintaining a strong AFS Club. The advisor is the link between the student club, the AFS exchange students, the school staff, the adult chapter and the community. The advisor often facilitates communication among these people by ensuring that the right people are talking to each other. We suggest the following as an advisor’s primary areas of concern:

  1. Provide leadership and guidance to the high school’s AFS student club.
  2. Help in the day to day adjustment of the AFS international exchange students being hosted at the school.
  3. Communicate regularly with the school administration and adult AFS chapter to keep them informed of AFS activity within the school and updated on the progress and well-being of the hosted students.
  4. Provide advice and support to US candidates interested in going abroad on AFS programs.
  5. Supervision of club finances. See club-related information in the article on being a Chapter Treasurer.
