Faces of America Program Overview

The AFS Faces of America (FoA) Program is a holistic, global education experience created to ensure intercultural learning is accessible to deserving students from minority and low income communities who wish to explore the world beyond their borders.

At the highest level, the program affords students from underserved communities the international skills and experience they need to thrive in higher education and an increasingly globalized workforce. Faces of America begins with mentoring, leadership development and educational enrichment at the local level. It culminates in a four to six week international exchange that may focus on community service, language study or cultural programs.

Upon return to the United States, students participate in continued mentoring, internships and community service to apply the global awareness and understanding they acquired abroad. Faces of American programs are delivered by an extraordinary consortium of community-based partners. These local community partners select from within their organizations students whom they believe demonstrate the highest potential to thrive abroad.

Upon meeting local requirements for participation, students are vetted for preparedness by AFS. Students are fully briefed and psychologically prepared for the challenges and experiences they will face as they immerse themselves in a new culture and language.
