About 115 volunteers and staff gathered this past weekend, December 4-6th, in chilly but beautiful San Antonio, TX for the 2010 National Hosting Meeting. The tone of this meeting was very different than those in years past; the focus of the weekend was not on training (although there were basic Global Link sessions) but rather on discussing and determining processes and procedures for 2010 and beyond. The meeting also served as the perfect forum to recognize and honor some notable volunteers and teams who achieved much success in the past hosting year.

The whole is only as strong as the sum of all of its parts, so the collaborative and collective effort of all volunteers in an area breeds excellence in exchange. The Outstanding Team Award recognizes exceptional team achievement in hosting. The teams awarded this honor are Alaska, Miss Tennky and World Class. Congratulations to all the devoted volunteers in these highly acclaimed Teams!

The Hosting Achievement Award was presented to teams that had the largest percentage increase of students placed in 2009 over their 2008 hosting actual. Colorado Rockies, DelMarPa and Minn-Kota were recognized for increasing their hosting capacity in the last year.

The Outstanding Hosting Volunteer Award was bestowed upon a select group of dedicated volunteers who consistently provide service that is considered above and beyond in the area of hosting, specifically focusing on the attributes of quality, timeliness and cooperation. Brenda Stoll (Kansas City), Carrie Chicken (Inland Empire) and Frank Johnson (Carolinas) are recognized as Outstanding Hosting Volunteer Award recipients.

Another select group comprised of new hosting volunteer leaders were honored for the skills and talents demonstrated in support of hosting. Exceptional new volunteers Janet Lorenz (Southern California Mountains and Deserts), Rosemarie Jackson (Ohio River Valley) and Terry Ford (Midland West) were awarded the honor of the Outstanding Hosting Rookies of the Year.

Congratulations to all the honored volunteers and teams for maintaining AFS as the world’s leading intercultural exchange program for high school students!
