Earthquake in Chile

I have received news from Chile that all of the USA students hosted in Chile are safe. They have spoken to all of the students, except for one who is not hosted in an area affected by the disaster. This is good news and Chilean staff are doing a great job at handling the communications with a very damaged system in place.

Regarding the Chilean students hosted in the USA, please ask their hosts to allow them to continue to try and call Chile directly to get some assurance that their families are safe. We recommend that they also email or use social networking sites if they are unable to connect by phone. AFS believes at this point that this is the most efficient way for the hosted Chilean students to connect to their families at this time. The reality is that they may not hear anything for several days but they should remain calm and keep trying.

If students have not been able to contact their families by Monday, please let the regional support staff know so that staff can inform AFS-Chile and we can begin to work that route as well.

As always if there is any emergency, our duty officer system is in place to handle these issues. If students receive any upsetting information about a friend or family member, please let the duty officer or the regional support staff know immediately.
