AFS-USA Position Description
Chapter Chair
The Chapter Chair advises and manages chapter volunteers in a goal-setting, recruitment and support activities. The Chapter Chair also facilitates regular contact among the local AFS community.
Responsible to: Team Chair and all chapter volunteers
Time Required:
- 2-3 hours/week
Competencies Required:
- Well organized
- Excellent relationship and team-building skills (Negotiating, mediating, recognizing others, problem-solving)
- Keeps commitments
- Effective at task delegation
- Passion for the AFS mission
- Effective at communicating with other volunteers and keeping them informed of important issues, events, and needs of the organization and of the chapter.
- Comfortable using a computer, specifically online
- Ability to interact effectively and persuasively with regional community members, school officials and others
- Demonstrate ability to work in collaborative environment with a variety of personalities and cultures
Training:
- Participation in national or regional conferences or training events
- Ongoing support from Regional Service Center and national staff
- Peer-to-peer training and/or mentoring available
Works with:
Responsibilities:
- Plan and coordinate regular AFS meetings. Create and update an annual calendar of events and ensure calendar information is distributed throughout the chapter
- Work with chapter volunteers in ensuring that program recruitment activities are implemented and that chapter goals are achieved
- Serve as the key link between the chapter, school, community and Team volunteers
- Work with other chapter volunteers to create and maintain positive school and community relations
- Assist in recruitment of new volunteers and ensure that they receive training and orientation
- Delegate tasks for special events as necessary
- Provide opportunities for frequent contact among AFS participants, host families, natural families and returnees
- Provide ongoing motivation and recognition of chapter volunteers
- Communicate regularly with Team Chair regarding recruitment, program activities and other relevant information
