The AFS-USA Board of Directors is pivotal to the good management, viability and direction of the organization. The Board of Directors is required to comply with all legislative and fiscal responsibilities, as well as engage in the planning and policy setting direction of AFS-USA. The Board’s efforts are to constantly work towards realizing the mission of AFS-USA.

It is Board policy that Directors accept the following responsibilities:

  1. set policy and provide vision and strategic direction for AFS-USA
  2. understand and promote the mission of AFS-USA
  3. make AFS-USA a priority of personal philanthropy
  4. secure and oversee financial resource management to ensure the organization’s financial viability
  5. attend at least 3 of the 4 meetings of the Board of Directors annually
  6. serve on at least one standing committee as requested by the Chairman
  7. assist in periodically assessing how well the Board and its individual members are fulfilling their individual roles and responsibilities
  8. select the Partner Director and appraise his/her performance. Be clear about his/her role and responsibilities.

It is not the role of the Board to be involved in day-to-day decisions and activities. The Board should support and provide feedback to the Partner Director so that he/she may carry out the strategies and policies approved by the Board.

The Board of Directors has a maximum of eighteen volunteer members. Six of these positions are reserved for "field volunteers" - three elected by the National Volunteer Assembly (one each year for a 3-year term), one elected by the National Council, the National Council Chair, and the immediate-past National Council Chair.
