The Goal

The goal of this project is to serve as educators in your communities, share your cultural experiences at schools, community events and cultural centers. This also gives returnees the opportunity to stay involved with AFS, while gaining the leadership skills to organize and host events.

Please feel free to direct your questions or comments to Intern Coordinator CMacfarlane@afs.org.

AFS Returnee Ambassadors utilize the following methods to share their AFS Story:

*Speak to a class about your experience

  • Offer to speak to a language class, world geography class or history class from your local community (preferably schools you have already attended) about the country you visited.
  • Ambassadors will create a personal presentation, which follows the guidelines used in their training, as well as, the AFS-USA presentation template, to share their experience abroad.

*Host an event in your community

  • Give a 30 minute presentation about your experience abroad. Host the event at your local community center, library, church, city hall, school district office, etc.
  • Ambassadors will create a personal presentation, which follows the guidelines used in their training, as well as, the AFS-USA presentation template, to share their experience abroad.

How do I find Returnee Ambassadors in my area?

Click here to be directed to the Private:2011 Returnee Ambassador Project Map containing the location of current Returnees active in Returnee Ambassador and Mentor volunteer projects. Note: This is contained on a 'private' page because it contains the confidential contact information of participants.

To use the map:

  1. Log into the AFSWiki. This is contained on a 'private' page because it contains the confidential information.
  2. Click on the map, which will take you to another page.
  3. Using your mouse, you can 'Zoom' into your area and find 'pins' with the contact information for the Returnees in your area. You can also use the tool in the top left corner to zoom in and out.
  4. When you click on a pin, the Returnee's contact information pops-up. In addition, their Returnee Initiative volunteer project, program, and country.
  5. From here you can use the provided information to contact trained Returnee Ambassadors to do an event in your local community.

The Process

Commitment

To be eligible to participate one must be a registered volunteer and able to commit to holding three local events. It is anticipated that the local events will take up to 1 - 1/2 hours for the returnee to share their story and answer questions at the end of the presentation. Returnees who complete their three local events, can choose to do more events or volunteer with another returnee outreach project. To maintain the Returnee members, at the end of each four months Kirsten Snyder will send an email to recent returnees and volunteers to find out more potential returnees who would like to share their story.

Training

Returnees are required to attend an online training session, which will introduce them to how to give a presentation about their AFS experience, how to set up a presentation with their local high school or community center and how to use social media, such as flyers, email, postings, press releases, postcards, etc, to advertise about their event. Also the training will cover how to direct attendees to learn more about getting involved with AFS such as sending, hosting, and volunteering. Once you have completed the Ambassador training we will send you an "Ambassador Starter Kit" with AFS materials that you can hand out at the end of your presentation to interested students and adults.

Leads

Through the local events organized by a returnee, they will get interested students and parents about AFS. The Returnee Ambassador will direct them to the AFS-USA website for more information as well as opportunities to sign up for Online Info Sessions provided by Student Services.

Resources to Review

Before your presentation you will want to review the following resources to give students/parents an up to date picture of current AFS programs. However, it is not your roll to memorize everything here, but rather it is a resource for you to refer to when students or parents ask these questions.

We appreciate all you give back to AFS! Keep up the great work!
