AFS Wiki now open
From AFSWiki
On March 1, 2010, the AFS Wiki is now "open", i.e. readable by users without a logon ID and password. The decision to do this was made by the National Council in April 2009, but there was much research and work involved during the latter part of 2009. The National Council, after careful consideration of all the detailed implications, reconfirmed their decision in January 2010. The AFS Wiki team made the actual changes and carefully tested them.
Prior to this change, the pages in the AFS Wiki were "closed" by default, meaning that one needed a logon ID and password in order to access them. Allowance was made for exceptions, how for each page that anyone wished to have open, the exact page name had to be communicated to one of the system administrators, they had to add this page to a list of "Anonymously readable" pages and reload one of the Wiki configuration tables with this information. Now the default is that pages are "open" by default, however, anyone can make a page "closed" by following an easy to use process.
Note however, that the following still require a logon ID and password:
- Update (add/change) access to any page
- Access to the user: pages (those pages which contain contact information about all the volunteers/staff who have a logon ID)
- Access to the private: pages (those pages which anyone has indicated should not be open)
- Access to discussion pages, history, and most of the "Special pages" which give statistics, etc. about the Wiki
Our thanks to the following individuals who played a key role in this project: Jeff Dooley, David Klawiter, Al Russell, Rich Senften, Jonathan Shakes.
