In just two weeks, approximately 75 volunteers from over 50 different volunteer teams and 25 staff, as well as AFS partner staff and volunteers and professional educators, will be gathering in Kansas City for the Outreach to Education Volunteer Conference. This conference will give AFS volunteers the opportunity to develop a more comprehensive approach to collaborating with schools on issues relating to global understanding. The objective is to position our local presence in a more strategic way to better align our program offerings to schools' needs, prepare us for growth and deliver our hosting and sending programs more effectively.

At the conference, volunteers will participate in activities intended to ensure that AFS volunteers are able to effectively “position” and promote AFS in ways that are relevant to educators, including the development of strategies for overcoming obstacles rooted in policy or perspectives held by local educators and administrators. Participants will also have time during the weekend to consider and begin to develop a school outreach strategy for their local school environment. In addition, there will be a panel discussion that will involve educators from a variety of roles and backgrounds, with a focus on how AFS-USA can be better aligned with and support the needs and interests of educators.

After the conference, volunteer participants are expected to work with a wide variety of other volunteers in their area teams to mobilize efforts to strengthen School Relations.

In the coming weeks, links to the materials from the weekend will be posted on the Outreach to Education Volunteer Conference page and the School Relations page on the AFS Wiki, so that all volunteers can easily access the most up-to-date information about working with schools.
