Confirm Candidate's Credentials
To determine if someone is AFS Staff...
- If the candidate uses an @afs email address, that's sufficient to establish they're a staff member.
- If a request comes from a different email address, per agreement on February 26, 2009:
- If a staff member says the person is legit, and agrees to take responsibility for that person's actions on the Wiki, then it's fine for any of us to set up the account -- and document, on the person's user: page, who the person's "sponsor" is.
To determine if someone is a registered volunteer...
- Login to Global Link at https://usa.afsglobal.org/AFSGlobal/
- In the yellow sidebar menu select Person
- Enter the last name or first and last name in the "English First Name" "English Last Name" field.
- Select Volunteer from the "Affiliation Type" field and click "Search".
- From the generated list below the Search button, select the person you are searching for and verify from the "Affiliation/Organization Column that you see both Volunteer and Active noted. This means that they are a registered volunteer and is all that is needed to issue a Wiki user name and password.
- As in the past, if the registration can not be verified refer them to Volunteer Services at Vol.reg@afs.org
Create the Account
- Log In under your account. It must have sysop privileges.
- Check the current users list to see if a user account for the person already exists, or if the alternate naming convention might need to be invoked.
- Navigate to the signup screen of Special:Userlogin
- Fill in the user name, the email address, and the "real name" on this form.
- Do not assign a password, since the system is going to reset the password automatically and send the password to the person.
- Assign a username according to the AFSWiki Username Standard.
- Press the by email button (not the "Create account" button)
- If you encounter the message: Login error: Username entered already in use. then...
- Possibility 1: The requester clearly already has an account. If the person has a "User:" page that matches their specifics, or the requesting email address matches the email address shown on Special:Listusers, then there's a clear match. Solution: send the requester a reply based on AFSWiki Forgot Login Email Template.
- Possibility 2: The requester may already have an account, but it's not clear. In this case, forward the request to User:RSenften who will do further research by searching historical account-request emails.
- Possibility 3: The requester doesn't have an account, but the appropriate username matches that of a different user. In this case, create an unique username by appending "2", "3" etc. For example, if "JSmith" already exists, then issue "JSmith2" or "JSmith3" etc, as necessary.
- (Preferred Option): Create first version of the new user's User: page, showing at minimum that person' full name, email address in "mailto:" format, and the userid of the person who requested the account. Also show the team and position of the volunteer if appropriate. If the request includes a phone number and/or JPEG photo, include them on the user page. By creating this page, you will provide a record of who created the account.
Reply to the requesting email
Reply by email to the requester, cc'ing sysadmin@afswiki.org, so that everyone knows the request has been handled. Here's a sample reply email:
Welcome to the AFS Wiki,
Your new AFSWiki account has been established and your Username is
1. You will receive your login information from an automated email within the next hour. Please note that both the User Name and password are case-sensitive.
2. Navigate to the login page found at www.afswiki.org/index.php/Special:UserLogin and enter your Username and password and click the Log in button. If you don’t find your password or in the future loose it, return to this page and type in your Username in the first box but leave the Password blank, then click on the “E-mail password” button. The system will email your password again to the address you provided at registration. Be sure to look for it in your spam filter and junk folder.
3. After logging in you will see your Username at the top of the page, we recommend changing your password to something you will likely remember. Click on the Preferences link in the upper right corner of the window to reach a page that will allow you to change your password.
4. We have created a basic User Page for you in AFSwiki using the information you provided. Please proof-read and double-check your page immediately. Feel free to edit your page if you would like to change, add or delete any of the information about yourself. Just click on your Username at the top of the window to get to your personal User Page.
5. Please consider adding a photo (or additional photos?) to your page. Here is a link to instructions on how to do that:
