Calling for NVA Action Items

The 2012 National Volunteer Assembly will be taking place in Charlotte, NC in the spring of 2012, and a large part of the NVA conference every year is evaluating and voting on action items submitted by AFS volunteers, and we are now open for submission.

What is appropriate for an Action Item? The NVA’s main role is to direct the organization toward pathways that contribute to the mission of AFS-USA, maintain the financial viability of the organization, and support our commitment to quality and promote growth.

As indicated in the National Volunteer By-Laws, your Action Item will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

 A) Impact to the organization
 B) Appropriateness of proposal
 C) Benefit to the greater good of the organization

Generally, Action Items may fall under the following categories:

 A) Programming processes (Hosting and Sending)
 B) Volunteer development, support and structure
 C) Volunteer management and oversight
 D) Volunteer Communication

How do I prepare my Action Item?

If you or your volunteer team has an issue you would like to be considered for inclusion in the 2012 NVA agenda, please complete the Action Item Request form and return it to the NVA Screening Committee at NVAScreening@afsusa.org.

When is my Action Item due?

This year we will have 2 submission options: December 1 and January 15.

  • If you submit your Action Item on December 1 and it is deemed incomplete or inappropriate, you may take into account feedback from the Screening Committee, and re-submit it on or before January 15.
  • All submissions received between December 2 and January 15 will be evaluated at the same time, after January 15.

Who is going to review the Action Items?

A screening committee, representing delegates from the 2011 NVA and the National Council, will review and screen all of the proposals that are received by the deadline date. Click on the link if you're interested in being part of the NVA Screening Committee.

What if my Action Item is Accepted?

Individuals who submit an action item request that is selected for inclusion at the 2012 NVA will be required to submit background papers to the NVA Screening Committee no later than 30 days before the scheduled meeting of the NVA. In addition, the sponsors of action items will be expected to take an active role in the creation of all background materials and discussions at the NVA.

A few tips for preparing your Action Item:

  • be clear and brief. Tell us exactly what you want and why in as few words as possible.
  • be clear about the benefit of your Action Item. How will it positively impact AFS as an organization?
  • be familiar with the NVA By-Laws and NC By-Laws.

Please direct any questions to NVAScreening@afsusa.org and we will respond as quickly and thoroughly as possible.

Thank you for considering what issues are most critical for the volunteers at AFS-USA to address in the coming year.

Sincerely,

NVA Screening Committee
